Comedian Peter Kay is to switch on this year’s Lights extravaganza, it was today announced.

The legendary funnyman will flick the famous switch at the Illuminations launch party on Friday, August 29.

Chart toppers Little Mix will headline the show along with Scottish rockers Texas.

Phoenix Nights star Kay, 41, is a huge fan of the resort after launching his career with his first ever live DVD ‘Live At The Top Of The Tower’ in 2000.

He has filmed numerous times in Blackpool and hosted the 2009 Royal Variety Show at the Opera House.

The Switch-On party will kick-start three days of entertainment on The Tower Festival Headland and signal the start of the 2014 Illuminations season.

X Factor winners Little Mix and Texas will be joined on stage by Union J, Pixie Lott, Neon Jungle and George Ezra.

They join a weekend line-up that includes West End showcases from Dirty Dancing, Chicago, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and excerpts from The Jersey Boys on the Saturday night, as well as Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, 911 and Damage on the Sunday.

The Saturday night will be headlined by Thriller Live, while Rebecca Ferguson will close the show on the Sunday.

Coun Graham Cain, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure at Blackpool Council, said: “Having Peter Kay as this year’s Switch-On star is a major coup for Blackpool.

“Peter is the most successful comedy act in this country over the past 20 years and has a long association with Blackpool. We are thrilled he will be joining the Switch-On
hall of fame.

“I’m also delighted to announce that Little Mix will headline the Friday night concert. They received rave reviews when they played to a sell-out crowd at the Winter Gardens recently and I’m sure this news will delight fans.”

Entrance to this year’s free Friday night Switch-On will be strictly wristband only.

Wristbands will not be available on the day but will be allocated at random through an online ballot with a maximum of four wristbands per household.

A total of 6,000 will be allocated to applicants from the Blackpool area.

Wristband registration closes at noon on Wednesday and successful applicants will be notified on July 29.
