A pair of disabled pensioners who stunned the judges in hit TV show Britain’s Got Talent have been wowing holidaymakers in Blackpool.
Terry and Jean McEwan have been in the resort for a break while their house move goes through.
They have been staying with Brenda Bowyer at her Grosvenor View guest house in King Edward Street for 10 days, but have been giving performances at venues around the resort.
BGT judges Piers Morgan, Amanda Holden, and Simon Cowell were left staggered in 2010 by the couple’s vocal performance singing their signature tune Let It Be Me, despite their age and health issues.
Brenda said: “They have both had lots of trouble with their health. Terry had a heart attack just over six weeks ago, but they have been performing nearly every day.
“They are a lovely couple. We had them singing in our dining room the other day and they are brilliant.
“They are a real surprise when they get up on stage. People must be thinking, ‘What have we here?’ but once they start singing people are just amazed.
“They have been singing all over Blackpool to stags and hens, at Ma Kelly’s, Nellie Deans, at the Royal British Legion Club, all sorts. Anywhere they go they sing. buses, trains, it does not matter to them. They perform in Alicante at Christmas and have been singing in Benidorm.
“At 86 and 83 it is a great achievement for them to be able to do this. Long they may sing.
“My daughter and I have only been running this guest house for six weeks, so this is a big thrill.
“We are from Huddersfield originally. I have been holidaying here with the family for 40 years and have stayed in all the guest houses in King Edward Street.
“We were here on holiday when the chance came to run the Grosvenor View for a while and then the chance came to buy it and we thought, why not? I never thought I’d end up running my own guest house, it’s a real thrill.”
Retired auditor Terry 86, and former cook Jean, 83, from Bognor Regis, wowed Britain’s Got Talent and got a standing ovation when they performed Let It Be Me at the Hammersmith Apollo in London 2010 after winning a string of karaoke competitions on holiday.
Impressed Piers Morgan, Amanda Holden, and Simon Cowell gave Terry and Jean three ‘yeses’ and put them through to the last 400 acts in the country trying to win a place on the hit show.
But in the later rounds, Simon decided that they were a little too frail with their health problems to have a chance of winning the programme.
Terry, who is blind in one eye and has half his face paralysed, has been suffering from heart trouble and Jean is deaf in one ear. They have been married 38 years.
Terry said: “We love it here in Blackpool, we have so many friends. We have been singing at all sorts of places, we love performing.
“When we were on Britain’s Got Talent we were staggered when everyone in the theatre stood up and clapped us. There were 4,000 people. It has been great and since then we have had a great time singing.”
Alison Woods, vice-chairman of the Royal British Legion Club on King Street, said the couple had been in every day this week and their act had gone down well with the club regulars.
She said: “We have free and easy sessions here nearly every day and Terry and Jean have been coming in all week. They have been great and really enjoyed themselves.”
