Sun shines on Headlands....at last

Fans of The Wanted and McFly at the Tower Headland, Blackpool

Fans of The Wanted and McFly at the Tower Headland, Blackpool

THIS is what we Wanted! It’s been a turbulent last week for Blackpool’s new Tower Festival Headland – after downpours and cancellations!

But glorious sun (at long last) and some stellar boy bands brought masses of music fans on to the resort’s Comedy Carpet and into its new open air arena.

So let’s hear it for the boys!

Just hours after John Barrowman had to pull the plug on his Headland debut due to heavy rain, thousands of screaming girls packed into the new outdoor arena under bright blue skies.

Support acts JUiCE, A*M*E, The Struts and Lawson got the crowd going ahead of a rocking performance from McFly’s Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd.

Hits like Obviously and Five Colours in Her Hair got families up dancing, the band’s covers of Livin’ on a Prayer and I Wanna Dance With Somebody proved real crowd pleasers while their encore of Shine A Light sent the fans into wild applause.

But the crowd still managed to save plenty of power in their vocal chords to welcome the pop band of the moment, The Wanted.

Having risen to fame in just less than two years, Nathan, Max, Siva, Tom and Jay were pleased to be back on home soil after cracking America and announced it as “one of the best gigs they had ever played”.

As they performed in the shadow of Blackpool Tower, Max said: “I’m loving this gig, who needs the Eiffel Tower?”

And their energetic set of hits like Lose My Mind, Heartbreak Hotel, All Time Low and Chasing the Sun left their fans shrieking for more.

A Coldplay medley, complete with their own instrumental additions, went down a treat and there was more ear-spitting cheers for the boys’ final song, Glad You Came.

Amber Sherlock, 10, and her friend Victoria Chellew, 10, from Liverpool, were staying over in Blackpool with their families especially for the long-awaited gig.

Amber said: “They were all amazing. It’s really good here, being outside in the sunshine. I want to come again.”

And Victoria added: “It’s been really good. I liked The Wanted the best.”

Tickets to the concert were a birthday treat for friends Emma Smart and Charlotte Bird, both eight, from Bolton, who looked the part with their bright pink inflatable guitars.

Emma said: “When we first arrived it was raining but then the sun came out and it’s been amazing. I love McFly and The Wanted.”

Charlotte said: “We’ve been screaming really loud!”

Charlotte’s mum, Vicki, said: “We’re impressed with the venue. The girls have really loved it.”
