It was a huge night for Blackpool – and Rod Stewart’s first gig in the resort in 40 years was also a cracker for The Gazette’s Hospice Heroes campaign.

The appeal, which aims to raise £200,000 for Trinity Hospice and Brian House children’s hospice, won a £25,000 boost thanks to gig promoters Cuffe and Taylor who donated £1 for every ticket sold.

And it was down to rock legend Rod himself to do the honours.

Presenting the cheque to Trinity’s Matron, Julie Huttley, Rod said: “You do such a great job.”

After shaking hands with Trinity’s fund-raising team, Rod thanked the heavens above for the beautiful weather before performing to his sell-out crowd.

He told The Gazette: “The Trinity Hospice appeal is a fantastic cause. Hospices provide an crucial service for their local communities and I’m really pleased that my appearance in Blackpool is helping in some way.”

Linzi Young, head of fund-raising at the hospice on Low Moor Road, Bispham, said: “To receive such a large amount of money is one thing, but for the man himself to take time out to hand it to you is something else. It took us all by surprise,

“We are so grateful to Cuffe and Taylor, and to everyone who attended the concert, for their generosity.”

Gazette editor Jon Rhodes said: “I want to thank Rod and Cuffe and Taylor for their amazing generosity.

“Daniel Cuffe and Peter Taylor have done Blackpool proud putting on a great night and this donation is just the icing on the cake.”

As well as the huge donation, Trinity volunteers spent the evening collecting donations in buckets which will also help boost our campaign.
