INTERNATIONAL music stars have graced its stage – and now Blackpool’s Tower Festival Headland has been given the seal of approval with a Design Excellence award in a national competition.

The award, at the Regeneration and Renewal Awards held in London, was presented to independent design consultancy LDA Design, which began working on the project in 2007.

The new outdoor concert arena opposite Blackpool Tower was opened by Sir Elton John in June – and since then millions of people have visited The Tower Festival Headland to see its attractions such as The Comedy Carpet, a unique artwork featuring famous comedian’s catchphrases, and the 35 metre high Dune Grass blades.

Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “The Tower Festival Headland and Comedy Carpet have proved to be huge attractions for tourists and residents alike.

“Not only do we have a totally unique outdoor events space with The Tower Festival Headland, but we also have the wonderful Comedy Carpet where every day, whatever the time of year, people can be seen wandering around, heads bowed and chuckling to themselves.

“We are delighted LDA Design has won this award. Their work in Blackpool has been tremendous and will be appreciated by millions of people for generations.”

The headland area also boasts Festival House incorporating Blackpool Register Office, a wedding chapel, tourist information Centre and restaurant, as well as the Spanish Steps

Robert Aspland, director at LDA Design, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for this award. The Tower Festival Headland has transformed the seafront in Blackpool.”
