A Fylde pub named by Gazette readers has won two awards just months after it opened.

The Poulton Elk in Hardhorn Road, Poulton, has been named pub of the season by the local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale.

And that coveted honour follows hot on the heels of the fifth annual Radio Wave Lifestyle and Culture Awards 2014, where The Poulton Elk was winner of the best public house award, sponsored by Blackpool BID.

The pub was given its name by owners Wetherspoons after it asked Gazette readers to choose a suitable local link.

The title comes from the discovery of skeleton of a 12,000 year old elk in a building site on Blackpool Old Road in 1970. The bones are on show at the Harris Museum in Preston.

Wetherspoons spent £1.4m converting the pub from the disused Edge bar and created 60 jobs.

Pub manager Julie Wilson said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won two awards in the space of a month, especially considering that the pub has only been open six months.”

“The Lifestyle and Culture award was voted for by the public, which means a great deal, so a huge thank you to all of our customers who nominated us. The CAMRA award is a fantastic achievement for the pub, as we really are a ‘new kid on the block’ and up against some excellent long-established real ale pubs on the Fylde coast.”

Tim Shipway, Blackpool Fylde & Wyre CAMRA pubs officer, said: “Whenever our members visit The Poulton Elk, they are never served a poor pint, the quality is always excellent.

“The range of ales on offer, 10 at all times, is also excellent, with different strengths and styles, from light to dark, including fruit beers, always available.

“The Poulton Elk is a worthy winner of our ‘pub of the season’ award.”

Representatives from CAMRA branch will present the award at The Poulton Elk on Thursday, July 24.
