NOTHING is quite what it seems in Blackpool this week as a “tsunami of magic” crashes into the resort.
Top magicians from around the world have flooded into town as the 25th International Federation of Magic Societies (FISM) World Championships got under way.
The dazzling event, which is held every three years, has never been to the UK before but has finally arrived at Winter Gardens, thanks to a successful bid by Blackpool Magician’s Club.
And as a spine-tingling opening ceremony packed the Opera House yesterday, the six-day competition got off to a thrilling start.
From light sabres, levitation and mind bending illusion to traditional card tricks and mind-boggling sleight of hand.
And the sight of so many international magicians in the resort is a welcome one to Arthur Casson from Blackpool Magician’s Club.
He said: “This really is the Olympics of magic, the performers on stage this week are the best in the world.
“Whoever wins will instantly become a star.
“Anne and Derek Lever from the magician’s club started work on Blackpool’s bid four years ago so it’s wonderful to see it finally arrive.”
There are two elements to the competition, illusion and close-up magic and hundreds of performers will amaze.
As well as the action on stage, the Empress Ballroom has become an Aladdin’s cave of the weird and wonderful as traders peddle their unusual wares.
From vibrant silk flowers, intricate swords, magic hats and even a wand or two, a magical treasure trove waits in store for visitors.
Addressing the competition, international president of FISM Eric Eswin said: “Expect an overwhelming magical explosion, a magical tsunami and memories which will last a lifetime.”
