A CHAMPION weightlifter and World’s Strongest Man contestant were on hand to lift the spirits of people wanting to get in shape this weekend.

An open day held at Crossfit Gym, Blackpool, welcomed more than 100 would be fitness freaks to sample the latest exercise craze, Crossfit.

The programme is a type of strength and conditioning training to increase cardio-vascular fitness as well as flexibility.

On hand were Chris Freebury, an Olympic weightlifter, and Jack Mackintosh, a World’s Strongest Man contestant, and staff from Exertrain, an Olympic weightlifting specialist, to inspire visitors to the gym on Whitehills Business Park, Blackpool.

Mark Windows, who has run for three months, said: “Crossfit is community based training, it was nice to have people like Chris and Jack there who have reached the top of their game, showing this is a good way of training.”

The session on Saturday afternoon ended with a ninja training taster session and competition between Blackpool Crossfit and a Crossfit gym from Wigan, with the Blackpool “underdogs” coming out on top.
