Hundreds of Coronation Street fans had a treat yesterday as some of the soap’s best-loved characters bade a fond farewell to Hayley Cropper.
Cast members David Neilson, Jennie McAlpine and Alan Halsall – characters Roy Cropper, Fiz Brown and Tyrone Dobbs – were on the Prom near the Comedy Carpet, filming scenes as they said their final goodbyes to much-loved character Hayley – who died from cancer earlier this year.
Against gusty conditions and high tides, with waves soaking crew members and extras as they crashed over the sea walls, the morning’s filming of scenes – where the trio scatter Hayley’s ashes – had to be put on hold for a couple of hours after the team initially set up.
But after a break, and lunch at the Beach House, filming continued and went on throughout the afternoon.
Jennie and Alan were seen taking photos and enjoying the sun, while David paced at times, checking his lines and preparing for what appeared to be dramatic dialogue between the trio.
After a while, the filming moved to make the most of the Blackpool backdrop, with Central Pier and the Comedy Carpet featuring.
The poignant scenes will echo back to Roy and Hayley’s trip to the resort last October, when they danced in the Tower Ballroom after her diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer.
Jennie said: “It has been fun. We’ve picked a high tide day, but never mind – it’s summer and it’s Blackpool, and it’s not raining. It’s a celebration of the episode when Roy and Hayley came to Blackpool and I’m so please Fiz and Tyrone are here.
“Although we’re saying our goodbyes to her, as long as Fiz is taking care of Roy we’ll remember her.
“It’s nice to say goodbye here too. The episode when they visited was so well received and it’s the seaside destination of choice to anyone who lives on The Street.”
