‘Carry a book and become a millionaire’

These young book worms earned themselves the unusual title of being ‘millionaires’ in their school library after reading more than a million words each.

Laura Spacey and Larry Tang, Year Seven pupils at Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College, notched up the impressive total over the course of just one month, as part of the school’s Accelerated Reader programme.

To put it into context, that’s the equivalent of the pair reading all seven Harry Potter books.

Accelerated Reader is a new initiative at the college, aiming to encourage and celebrate reading for pleasure.

Points are allocated to a book based on the number of words and the book is graded according to difficulty.

When a student has read a book, they take a short quiz about it and, if they are successful, earn points and have the number of words added to their running total.

The advice on how to achieve this is simple from Larry and Laura: “Always have a book with you.”
