ON A weekend when the weather again hit rugby union action, the second XVs of Blackpool and Thornton Cleveleys enjoyed excellent victories.
Blackpool won through to the second round of the Raging Bull Plate with a 45-12 win over Broughton Seconds at Mossom Lane. Full-back Tom Sanderson sped over for the first try in the opening minutes.
Broughton levelled the scores only for two tries
in four minutes by storming no.8 Brady Barcock and centre Tom Cockcroft to make it 21-7 at half-time.

Despite the visitors scoring again early in the second half, Blackpool took control with tries by captain Sean Donnelly and Cockcroft's second.

A fine run by second row Ryan Roberts resulted in another try before Barcock added his second.

Skipper Donnelly landed five conversions to take his match haul to 15 points for Blackpool, who will be at home to Hawcoat Park Seconds in the second round on January 2.

*Prop Terry Ryan came out of retirement to great effect as Thornton Cleveley shocked previously unbeaten league leaders Tarleton 26-3.

With fellow front-rower Chris Carney also refusing to take a backward step, it was centre Tom Lancashire who opened the scoring on his impressive return to action after breaking a hand.

Tarleton got off the mark with a penalty, but strong tackling by the much-improved Simon Boynton paved the way for Lancashire to score his second. Mark Burrows also defended gallantly as TC reached half-time 12-3 up.

Sharif Ela crowned his man-of-the-match return after injury with the next try and Chris Beggan outpaced the defence from a chip-and-chase for the final score, Mike Butler kicking three conversions. Andy Dahl, Pete Rae and Dave Kay also impressed for the winners.

*Fleetwood RU won 15-3 at Burnley in the North Lancs/Cumbria League.
