SHAUN Barker has been praised for his "excellent attitude" since returning to training.
But Pool had better brace themselves – Derby have announced they're about to make an increased offer for the defender.

The long-running saga is set to step up a notch next week, with Derby prepared to try their luck again – and that could prompt Nottingham Forest, another with one eye on securing Barker's services, to get involved as well.

However, that's all conjecture – Holloway is simply delighted at the way Barker has put the distractions to the back of his mind and got on with the job in hand.

"Shaun needs to listen to me," said Holloway.

"He was fantastic in training, he is a fantastic lad – and you don't get them cheap and you don't get them easy.

"We've worked with him over the last few years to make him what he is now and he knows that.

"There is a great respect between me and between him, and him for the club.

"Somewhere along the line we are all going to benefit."

Asked if he was concerned Barker might not be happy to still be at Blackpool, the boss replied: "I don't need to be assured that Shaun's happy. He has signed a contract and put very, very simply, he belongs to us.

"He is a very professional lad and he is going to play well for us – and he needs to play well right now because we have actually shown our hand and said 'yes, you can have him for X amount'.

"Now they haven't come back with that and if they don't, Shaun will have to deal with that because the length of contract is the key.

"If he'd let his contract run out he'd have probably gone by now because we wouldn't have had the power."

Pool are believed to be willing to accept a bid of somewhere between £750,000 and £1m.

Derby know the exact figure being asked for, and the fact they are preparing to move back in with a new offer makes it seem likely the 26-year-old centre back will be on his way.

"We are still talking (to Blackpool) and, hopefully, we will be going back in the next few days," said Rams boss Nigel Clough.

"We made an offer which has been rejected so we are in the process of drawing up a fresh offer which will go in as soon as we can."

He's a top notch defender, and if at a different club would be worth at least £1.5 million.

If we can get a million for him and make 2/3 new signings it could be good for the club.

The Doncaster CH has had bids of 2.5m, why can we not quote that for Barker, especially when more than 1 club are after him.We always let players go on the cheap!!
We need to hold out for over 1m then get Charlie Adam.
If Barker goes, pity Peter Clarke is not available anymore for free!

With some of the signings that are going on, 750k would be very poor in my opinion. At least 1 million. They have to look at the market and think if we sell Barker, can we get two players in to improve our squad. For 750k, lucky to get one.

Will not be impressed if Pool get bullied for 750k

Personally i dont want Barker to go for any amount.

And if Barker is only going because of money then if he waits a season he could be worth more maybe.

I agree with Orinoco. Shaun has worked hard. He is used to the Blackpool set up. He is happy with it. He plays well because of it. We should do right by him and pay him the going rate. His only move should be to a top club which can bring him on more than we can.
Good players are hard to come by whatever the cost.

You need that quality spine in the team and SB is a crucial part of that, with a good central midfield player and goal scorer (We may have one!) we can do very well this year, but a price is on his head and if Olie thinks he can invest that to improve the team maybe that is the way forward.

Always hard to loose a player who you have watched develop into a class act, but we progressed after loosing Wes and Kaspas…

Up the Pool!!

Everyone said the same when Kaspars went, difference now is we're getting a decent fee not a paltry 250K. Defenders are easy to replace even Shaun. He's been great for BFC and deserves his 'big' move to Forest. Bring on Charlie Adam the best player I've seen in Tangerine for 25 years.

cannot compare Kaaspars to shaun kaspers maybee was worth 750k to a million barkers worth 2 to 2.5 million in todays prices I think we will really struggle without him I agree with Charlie Adam 1 of the classiest players to pull a tangerine shirt on
in a very very long time.Come on KKarl push the boat out just for once no gamble involved here 122 months down the line adam with a few scotland caps you are talking millions. keep shuan and buy charlie with a real contract 4 or 5 years not 2 with options

I don't want Barker to go. He's a good player, and we have no reason to let him go. Good players can stay at Blackpool!!
