IAN Holloway can't wait for the big derby.
But the manager is more realistic than most when to comes to looking at the bigger picture, beyond Monday's game against Preston North End.

As a Bristol Rovers-mad youngster, and later player and manager, Holloway used to get so wound up by the Rovers-City derby that he left himself exhausted.

It's why he won't let himself get too caught up in the emotion and drama of Monday's showdown, even though he'll love every minute.

Said Holloway: "I left Bristol many years ago and before I left the biggest thing ever was the derby and whether we beat them.

"Then I went to London and people used to say 'did you play for City or Rovers?' It meant absolutely nothing to them.

"So I'm sorry but does anyone really care about Preston and Blackpool? Do you know what I mean?

"I want them to care about us by getting to the Premier League and I'm sure Alan Irvine is the same.

"You can't hide people's emotions. It is a wonderful game and a wonderful way of spending your recreation time – supporting a team and being part of a gang.

"But at the end of the day there are three points at stake.

"Hopefully we'll win because we play better than them.

"If they beat us I'll shake their hands and say well done and we move on from there."

Holloway has read several reports on Preston and watched them in action earlier in the week when they were edged out by Newcastle at Deepdale.

"It was a terrifically hard-fought game, nothing outstanding, both well organised," he said.

"Newcastle won but Preston could easily have taken the points.

"I admire Preston. They have been there or thereabouts the last two seasons and have come close to promotion so they are a yardstick for us to try and catch and one day overtake – and if we can do that I'm sure the Blackpool fans will be happy.

"I've got the utmost respect for them but I won't be changing things – either in our build-up or the way we play.

"It is just another game, though yes it's a derby, a night match, on TV, and I can't wait."

Holloway has all sorts of selection dilemmas. Neal Eardley will hope for a recall at right back, which could mean a reshuffle of the back four.

Billy Clarke, Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Hameur Bouazza are also champing at the bit for a place in the starting line up, while Ishmel Demontagnac is available again after completing a three-match suspension.

DON'T MISS OUT EIGHT-PAGE DERBY PULL-OUT, ONLY IN SATURDAY'S GAZETTE.

Hoping for a Pool victory, but whichever the way the result goes we should make it a great spectacle for the watching public on Sky TV and hopefully it will be played with the spirit of friendly rivalry in the name of Ray Charnley a great servant for both clubs.

Unfortunately too many PNE fans genuinely won't travel to sit in that AWFUL 'stand'. We'll know more about support levels next season when we have somewhere half-decent to sit at gloomfield. Any of you lot remember when you couldn't even sell 5,000 HOME tickets for the last time we came to the 'old-style' Bloomfield? You ended up giving us half the ground cos you couldn't fill it! So think on before you start on about support levels!

On a serious note it is bad that we can't sell 1700 tickets but there'll be 1500 of us singing in the rain and being very jealous of you lot sitting under cover!

No excuses for not selling 1750 tickets for a top half Championship fixture 20 mins down the road. Simply Deplorable!

Not surprised though. Preston habe always had poor away support and I have noticed they have finished in the bottom 3 for away supported clubs in the Championship for the past 2 seasons, despite reaching the play-offs both years.

We take 5,000 to Sleepdale, they can only muster 1600 to Bloomfield. C'est la vie.

Wood....you cant sell your home tickets in that peerrfect ground of yours!! So, dont come here with your excuses! We would sell 1700 tickets to watch Pool in a mud bath (old Wigan) in our underpants, in the hail!! Especially to watch us beat you lot!

Get out of here!

Lee Mc - you couldn't even sell 5,000 HOME tickets for the game I mentioned! Indeed, how many times have you filled your TINY ground this season?? If we had your size of ground then EVERY one of our home games this season would have been sell-outs, in fact there would barely be any tickets available on the day with 8,000 season ticket holders.

Face it - it's a bigger game for you lot than it is for us, which is why we took more to Doncaster than will be coming to GLOOMFIELD!
