BUDDING bowler Zach Selant caught the eye of cricketing hero Mal Loye in more ways than one this week.
The Roseacre Primary School pupil, who is 11 tomorrow, was among the South Shore CC under-11s who received an evening's coaching from the Lancashire star and his team-mate Iain Sutcliffe.
Under a joint Lancashire and Lancs Cricket Board initiative,
the two Red Rose batsmen attended the Palace Shield club's opening indoor nets at Arnold School.
South Shore are the sole Fylde club privileged to get a visit from Old Trafford's senior players in the run-up to the season, and Loye said he and Sutcliffe really enjoyed putting the lads through their paces.
The Gazette columnist said: "Zach is a left-armer who I tried to change from seam bowling to spin – but I don't think he was that keen. I told him that in a few years' time, when he has to reel off 25 overs, he'll appreciate my advice!
"Zach has his hair dyed, so he got a bit of a lecture from me about that!"
This year's Lancashire beneficiary said the Old Trafford players welcomed the chance to to put something back into the grassroots by touring schools, clubs and youth associations.
"I remember as a schoolboy in Northampton how much I appreciated the Northants players coming along to do some coaching. It was a rare opportunity then, just as it is for youngsters today, and maybe it could be done more.
"We've done a little coaching at Old Trafford but now the club are getting us out and it's rewarding. We may spot a prospect or two and we'll keep our eyes open."
Lancashire tackle Surrey in the County Championship at Stanley Park on August 27-30 but Loye has arranged to play at the venue before then – in an all-star Twenty20 on Sunday, July 20 as part of his benefit.
South Shore's junior co-ordinator Duncan Cowburn said the club were grateful for the VIP visit.
"We only reformed our junior section in 2000 and now we run seven teams from under-11 to under-17, with nearly 100 youngsters playing," said Cowburn.
After dropping out of the Palace's top two divisions, Shore believe they now have a base to build on for a bright future.
Cowburn added: "Half this season's first XI will have come through the junior ranks. There will be one 15-year-old and at least three 16-year-olds playing on merit."
His nephew, 21-year-old Matthew Cowburn, has taken over as new skipper from David Tracey.
