Preston manager Alan Irvine has defended Ross Wallace for his 'over the top' celebration
Billy Clarke, who became Ian Holloway's first signing in the summer after he was released by Ipswich, opened the scoring after just 27 seconds with a sweetly-struck shot from 25 yards.

The 21-year-old striker went on to hit the woodwork twice in the first half but the Seasiders could not make their dominance pay and Wallace punished them with a fine goal seven minutes before the break.

He was booked after he ran to the visiting supporters to celebrate and a steward appeared to get injured after being caught up in the ensuing melee, yet Irvine absolved his player of any blame.

He said: "It was a fantastic free-kick and absolutely top class from Ross.

"If we start to take celebration out of the game then it will be a poorer game.

"Ross ran over to our fans but I can't tell from here whether he stepped off the pitch or stayed on the pitch.

"But I certainly don't think that he was jumping over barriers to get to our supporters.

"Our supporters understandably reacted in a very excited way and I believe that a steward got injured, which I'm extremely sorry to hear.

"I hope he's okay but I don't think Ross did an awful lot wrong."

Preston deserved credit for grinding out a result after being outplayed for the majority of the first half by Holloway's vibrant side.

Irvine added: "We deserved a point. We got off to the worst possible start but full credit to the lads, they showed a lot of character, determination and courage to stay in the game at a time when it could have gone away from us.

"Gradually we worked our way back into it and deserved to come away with something."

The result lifted Blackpool into sixth spot but Holloway was left furious with the free-kick decision that allowed Wallace to fire Preston level.

Holloway said: "There was a blatant foul on Marcel Seip just beforehand and what he gave that free-kick for I do not know.

"But other than that, I thought we were fantastic and I thought it was a moral victory for Blackpool over Preston, even though there is a long way still to go this season.

"I'm very proud of my team, my ground, my pitch and the way we tried to play.

"If that's my first taste of this derby then I can't wait for a few more."

Holloway reserved special praise for Clarke, adding: "He's got fantastic talent and as long as he believes himself in the future then he'll have no worries.

"He's hungry, he wants to play and he's only 21, but I'm really pleased with my whole team."

Great performance shame we could not get the second goal we deserved in the first half. On the whole of the match i think we definately played the better football. Bring on Barnsley on saturday.

Wallace was not to blame for the Poor Stadium conditions that Blackpool put the away fans in. Its not the first time someone has been injured in that stand. Players celebrate in front of their OWN supporters. Why Did Clarke not get Booked he ran to the Blackpool Fans? Double standards by a shockingly Poor Referee. No Preston Didn't deserve the point, on the Night Blackpool did, but the referee was a Tangerine. We had him many times and he's always been against Preston. What I surgest now is that Blackpool FC spend some cash securing the Barriers down that side of the pitch. They should never of been that easy to come down. The club will know about it, if a player goes sliding into them and gets seriously injured. And can I just say a BIg Thanks to Ian Holloway for praising the Preston Fans at the end of the game.

Sorry David, I thought the ref was very fair to both teams. That kind of 100 mile-an-hour derby must be the hardest thing to keep under control, and he did as well as you could hope.
Great game, fair result, good advert for NW footy. Thought Blackpoo looked one of the best teams we've played all season, although our overall fitness looked superior in the last 15 mins

It is about time that the FA put a stop to the stupid, purile and over the top antics that players get up to when they score, congratulate, yes, but this stupid slidinging over the turf, removing shirts, and a lot more, grow up players and do what you you get good money for ,play football and act like gentlemen

Agree with PNE pepe. I also agree with David C comment regards the stand, it is not acceptable and now a steward has been injured!

A great game of football, with both teams 'going' for it. We should have won but unfortunately we couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo last night - far too many chances missed and squandered.

dare I say it - that we may need a striker who can finish.....

Post 8, 1 the Barriers are not fit for Championship football, if a Player slides into them, they'll know about it. Also it is rumoured a Fan fell threw the stand last night. Temporary or not, it is unsafe and should be closed with immediate effect. Whats it going to take? the whole Stand Collasping? Too many fans hurt in that stand and its not fair on the rest of the championship clubs that have to spend Millions on providing secure and proper accomodation for away fans.

Lets be honest - the East stand is a total embarassment to our club and lets hope that the council held to develop it OR close it for next season. Players should celebrate a goal, but it has now got totally out of hand - Jamie Bullard's at City was brilliant though.
The PNE game is still the best atmosphere of the season - I bet the big game fans don't come on Sat V Barnsley - shame on you. Up the mighty Pool.
