KYLE Hogg was the one Lancastrian to derive any satisfaction as Scotland continued to cast their extraordinary spell over us at Old Trafford this week.
The Scots won in Manchester for the third time running but the important point for Kyle was that an unbeaten 66 plus two economical wickets provided crucial ammunition in his bid to nail down a place in the team.
Kyle's a smashing lad and a natural
all-round sportsman but he's under-achieved in terms of his ability as a pace bowler.
Consequently he's under a certain amount of pressure so this is a make-or-break year for him. With so much competition for places, he'll be well aware that he needs to hit it off.
I'm really pleased that he's been among the wickets and the runs during the past week, beginning with the Durham University match for which I was privileged to leads our side.
While applauding Kyle, there was nothing else to be pleased about in our latest beating by the Scots. Having played in all three defeats by them in the past five years, I'm beginning to think I'm a jinx!
No one could deny the Scots Monday's two-run triumph in the Friends Provident Trophy. In fact, without a stand between Kyle and Luke Sutton we'd have taken a real hammering.
It was incredible how things turned out considering a week earlier we'd hammered them at their Grange ground in Edinburgh by eight wickets. It certainly wasn't a case of complacency in the return – we didn't under-estimate them.
The Old Trafford pitch wasn't the best and favoured the seamers but we can't use that as an excuse. Greenock-based South African Dewald Nel and Edinburgh-born former Yorkshire and Northants player John Blain led the way as Scotland took a leaf out of Steven Croft's book and bowled a similar line and length to the Blackpool boy. Steven's four for 24 was his best figures for the county.
Our guys seemed to keep nicking the ball or getting trapped lbw and, from 44 for seven, we were lucky to get as close as we did to their total. Luke and Kyle put on 71 before Luke went to spinner Glen Rogers, who originates from Australia.
Scotland seem to raise their game when they come to Old Trafford. We're a much better team than this result suggests and were terribly disappointed with how we performed. However, it's not something we should dwell on.
Generally we're doing all right in the Friends Provident group. Beating Scotland would have put us in the box seat but instead there's that bit more pressure on us for Sunday's Roses clash with Yorkshire at Old Trafford.
What we do need is a County Championship win under our belts so we've got to be ready to take advantage of a depleted Durham team over the next four days.
