Town seal record deal for McNulty

Fleetwood Town have landed central defender Steve McNulty from Barrow for a club record fee of £17,000.

McNulty leaves Barrow after two successful seasons, helping them win promotion to the Blue Square Premier in 2007/8 and making 40 appearances in the top flight of non-League last term.

The former Liverpool Academy skipper, who went on to have spells with Burscough and Vauxhall Motors, becomes Town's fifth signing of the close season.

McNulty vowed: "I'm a good leader and I will do well for Fleetwood.

"Barrow did look after me but I'm coming to a club which is on the up, and hopefully I will help get them go up.

"I have played against Fleetwood a few times and they are always tough games. Hopefully, with the few additions they have made, they will be going for the play-offs if not automatic promotion."

Speaking from Lilleshall, where he is completing his UEFA A coaching licence, manager Micky Mellon said: "Fleetwood Town have put a great deal of effort into this signing. Steve is a top player who will certainly make us better and has the record to prove it.

"This is an ambitious club. We have a clear goal of where we want to be and Steve picked up on that message very quickly. This is probably the strongest squad ever to line-up for Fleetwood Town.

"There is going to be a great deal of scrapping for those 11 red shirts every week and that sort of competition is very healthy."

Town chairman Andy Pilley added: "Steve claimed the Blue Square North player of the season 12 months ago, when he played a big part in Barrow's promotion. We expect Steve to play a similar role next season for Fleetwood."
