The glorious TWELVES
IF Twenty20 tournaments test the ability of teams to score runs fast, it's nothing compared to the event at South Shore CC on Sunday.
There was certainly no time to play yourself in this six-overs-a-side competition for under-12s in which Thornton Cleveleys proved themselves the masters.
They won all their five games, beating hosts South Shore by 18 runs in the final.
Team members Gregory Lenoir, George Radcliffe, Tom Rowlinson, Thomas Williams (wicketkeeper) and Sam Willan all played their part but it was opening batsmen Matthew Stewart and Thomas Higson who held the key to Thornton's success.
Thornton lost just a single wicket in three of the games and none at all in the other two as Stewart and Higson went for their shots from the start. All the matches were six-a-side, with every player bar the wicketkeeper bowling an over each.
The teams were split into four groups of three and Thornton, who defeated Lytham and Lowerhouse in group D, were not the only team to win both their games. South Shore topped group A, with Garstang winning group B and South Shore A group C.
The winners played the group runners-up – Penwortham, Fleetwood, St Annes and Lytham – in the quarter-finals.
In the semis, neither Thornton nor South Shore lost a wicket as they recorded victories over Lowerhouse and Penwortham respectively.
Thornton's winning coach Dave Higson said: "It was a great day and all the lads played well. The bowling was fantastic all-round and the batting of Matthew and Thomas was really good."
Organiser Paul Swallow, whose South Shore side also gave such a good account of themselves, added: "Carl Kennedy's batting was excellent for us, but all the players batted and bowled well in an what was a very enjoyable tournament, which was blessed with great weather this year."
Last year's tournament had been spoiled by rain but the sun shone gloriously this time ... and Thornton responded in glorious style.
*Thornton continued their winning form away to Radcliffe in the Lancashire Cup on Monday, sealing victory with an over to spare after the home side had set a target of 80. Sam Bradshaw led the way for Thornton with 24.
