The Barcelona of Blackpool
WATERLOO clinched a football double by adding the Champions League title to the Blackpool Primary Schools' Cup.
The four qualifiers for the Champions League semi-finals played off at Stanley Park on Friday after winning their groups and two knockout rounds.
The league kicked off after Christmas, with Anchorsholm, Layton and Roseacre joining Waterloo in the semis.
Waterloo had seen off Marton 4-1 in the second round to set up a quarter-final thriller with Moor Park, which went to extra-time.
A penalty put Moor Park ahead at half-time, and it looked like being their day when a Waterloo penalty was saved.
Matthew Sheridan equalised only for Moor Park to regain the lead almost immediately with five minutes left.
Alex Footman equalised with a dipping shot with seconds remaining, then goals in both periods of extra-time by Matthew Sheridan and Michael Woon sealed the 4-2 win.
In the semi-finals, Waterloo beat Anchorsholme 5-1, never looking back after a brave header by William Robinson gave them a first-minute lead.
Waterloo keeper Hamza Shah made some fine saves as his team-mates took their chances at the other end, leading 3-0 at half-time after goals by Will Robinson and Josh Edwards.
Robinson completed a hat-trick in the second half with a left-foot rocket, though Anchorsholme did manage a consolation goal.
It continued a run of 'so near but so far' for Anchorsholme, who have reached the semis for the past four years but are still waiting for their first win. However, they did win the third-place play-off against Roseacre, who had been edged out 2-1 by Layton in a tight semi-final which went to extra-time.
In the final, it was Layton who made the bright start as Matty O'Reilly put them ahead inside two minutes.
However, Waterloo hit back in style as goals in rapid succession by Matthew Sheridan, William Robinson and Josh Edwards made it 3-1 at the break.
Layton pressed to get back in the game, but a penalty miss kept the deficit at two and Edwards scored a second in the final minutes to seal the victory.
All the matches were officiated by boys and girls from the Leaders Acadamy, who volunteer to support sport in school and the community.
