The 2013 Fleetwood Bowling Festival came to a fantastic finale in front of 500 spectators at the Marine Gardens in the town.
Mike Leach (Preston) won the men’s singles final, beating David Walker, from Swinton, in the final. It was Leach’s second win in the event.
Trailing 15-16 Walker led a toucher on a swinging corner mark as the crowd applauded. In reply Leach played a bowl one foot from the jack which Walker then matched.
After walking up to look at the end Leach played a superb wood which tapped his opponent’s toucher and after a close measure claimed two to lead 18-15.
Leach never looked back and ran out the 21-15 winner.
Leach was presented with the winner’s trophy and the £1,000 first prize by the sponsors Willowgrove Leisure and Fishery.
The women’s title went to Warringtonn’s Karen Galvin, who had won the title three times previously. She beat Sheila Speed, from Wigan.
Karen used her green knowledge and soon raced into an 18-8 lead before Sheila started her fightback.
The game ended 21-10 to the Warrington player who claimed the title for a record fourth time.
Remarkably Karen also won the Ladies’ Fleetwood Shield to become the first woman to win both major Festival competitions in the same year.
Both the men’s and ladies’ singles winners qualify for the Champion of Champions events at the Waterloo in Blackpool in September.
