Socceroo signs for Pool

BLACKPOOL beat the deadline to conclude a deal to sign Australian World Cup left-back David Carney.

The Socceroo is coming to Bloomfield Road on a one-year contract with an option for a further 12 months,- the transfer from Dutch champions FC Twente had to be ratified by the Premier League before it could be signed off.

The deal, for an undisclosed fee, was concluded 24 hours after the transfer deadline - Blackpool officials were in a similar situation to Tottenham on a much bigger scale, who pushed through a deal for Rafael Van der Vaart from Real Madrid 'after-time'.

Blackpool secretary Matt Williams said: "We got the emails back from FC Twente just before six o'clock on Wednesday night, so it was a mad rush to to get them printed off and faxed to the FA and the Premier League.

"Fortunately, the confirmation came through and I was delighted to tell the gaffer (Ian Holloway) and 'Carnes' that the move had been given the green light."

Carney won't be joining his new team-mates currently on tour in Latvia - he is due to join the Aussie squad preparing for an international in St Gallen against Switzerland tomorrow night.

Carney's arrival will put pressure on Stephen Crainey for the left-back berth.

He said: "It has been a busy 24 hours, but I am delighted it is done now, and I am looking forward to getting out there playing.

"The way Blackpool play suits me and I am looking forward to meeting the lads and getting started."

Carney has been on the books of Everton, Oldham, Sheffield United and Norwich City, as well as spells down under.

He played in the World Cup for Australia this summer in the Group matches against Ghana and Serbia in South Africa.

He was in the Twente squad that won the Dutch title last season under former England boss Steve McClaren.
