No Way for the Cambridge clash

Mike Waywell

CENTRE Mike Waywell is virtually certain to be missing from the home ranks tomorrow, when Cambridge are the visitors to the Woodlands.

Waywell has been struggling with a back injury, so much so that coach Mark Nelson said: “He could hardly walk in training on Tuesday.

“Unless he makes an unlikely recovery, we are not planning to include him.”

As result, the centre pairing will be Richard Kenyon and Stephen Briers, with Steve Collins taking over the fly-half berth and linking up with scrum-half Steve Depledge.

Fylde go into the match on the back of two defeats at home to Blaydon and then away to strugglers Barking.

But Nelson is adamant that is not the signal for gloom and despondency– far from it.

He said: “It is all very postive and we are still third in the table. It is not as if we are at the bottom, looking over our shoulders all the time.

“Though we lost at Barking, it was an improvement on how we played at Blaydon the previous week, though we gave away too many penalties and paid for that ill-discipline.”

There has been an enforced rejig in the Fylde back division, with Oli Brennand taking part in a seven-a-side tournament in Las Vegas.

Nelson said: “Oli is an amateur player and when the chance comes to play in a tournament in the United States, it is something that you don’t turn down.”

The Fylde coach is not rulling out further signings in the run-up to the deadline for registrations a week today, though it looks unlikely.

He said: “I am looking round and talking to some Premiership clubs, but there is nothing remotely near concrete.

“But I have a lot of contacts and you never know what can happen. After February, we have a very tough run-in to the end of the season.”

A decision about whether tomorrow’s match goes ahead is expected late this afternoon, taking into consideration the opposition’s travel plans.

Nelson said: “You don’t really know where you stand with the weather at the moment.

“On Tuesday we were able to train on the pitch at Fylde but on Thursday it was rock-hard.”
