Fylde's Wander boys

FYLDE RU have a weekend off from the rigours of chasing a last-gasp play-off spot – but it's an important weekend for the club's second XV, Fylde Wanderers, who host Manchester (3pm).

The Fylde team, managed by Rob Parr and Ben Hall, are second in the Bateman BMW Premier League and are bidding for their highest finish ever.

One more win will secure the title for leaders Sedgley Park but the race for second place is very much alive.

Mark Briggs and Lewis Boyd will be missing from the squad that beat Altrincham-Kersal, though Adam Slaughter, Adam Lewis, Martin Wallwork and Getty Schinkel all return.

Head coach Mark Nelson has spelled out the importance of a strong second team.

"We need to raise the bar for the Wanderers players if they are to make the very big step up to National League rugby," he said.

Excellent

"We have some excellent young players who have made a major contribution to the team's success this season.

"Lewis Boyd, Andrew Irving, Ollie Austin, Danny Waller, Adam Slaughter, Jonny Walmsley, Mark Edwards, Andrew Rosen and Ted Scott have all had first team exposure and have benefited from it.

"We need to step up the support to these players if they are to maximise their potential, which is why we intend to appoint a dedicated Wanderers coach for next season."

The plan is for the Wanderers to play some fixtures on Friday evenings next season, once floodlights have been installed.

Tomorrow's match will be preceded by a mini-juniors fixture between Fylde and Manchester (12.30pm).

Fylde Thirds are away to Eccles Seconds in division three north tomorrow, while BAe Warton visit Sedgley Park III and Fylde IV visit Upper Eden II in division four north.
