FYLDE rugby union club face a fight to keep hold of centre Mike Waywell.

The Lancashire and England Counties three-quarter is attracting interest from a Championship club as well as one from Italy.

Waywell has come on in leaps and bounds over the last two seasons as well as earning representative honours since arriving at the Woodlands from Preston Grasshoppers.

Fylde coach Mark Nelson said: “Waywell has improved massively and has become one of the most dangerous midfield players in our division.

“We want to keep him, but if he gets a substantial offer that he wants to accept so he can better himself, then we would not want to stand in his way.”

Waywell is in the Fylde team that travels to National League One champions Jersey tomorrow for the final National League One clash of the season.

Fylde will take 24 players to Jersey, even though the the Rugby Football Union will only fund a flight for 20.

Nelson said: “The players and management have shelled out £25 each to pay for the rest of the players, so that all those involved during the season can come with us to Jersey. It is a unique end to the season ... not like going to Hull Ionians! We want to finish the season to the best of our ability. It is not going to be a jolly by any stretch of the imagination.”

Flanker Evan Stewart is winning his battle to take his place in the line-up.

Nelson said: “His chances are pretty high. He has come on a lot after it looked at one stage as though he would definitely miss the match.

Second row Paul Arnold needs a fitness test due to ‘general wear and tear’.

Brothers Sam and Josh Beaumont will feature for Fylde, then after the match father Bill will present the champions trophy to the islanders.
