De La Salle 8, Fleetwood RU 17
FLEETWOOD kept their noses in front in the North Lancs and Cumbria League title race with victory over an aggressive Salford side.
Fleetwood were forced into changes, with Danny Tomlinson and Tom Evans replacing Lee Stouton and Charlie Osbourne. The visitors took the lead after only five minutes, when a lineout was followed by a rolling maul and player coach Roger Banks scored.
Sustained Fleet pressure resulted in scrum-half Evans scoring between the sticks, man of the match Ryan Riches’ penalty making it 12-0.
De La Salle got on the scoreboard with a penalty but Banks’ second try, from another rolling maul, made it 17-3 at half-time.
De La Salle’s uncompromising style saw them concede plenty of penalties, but Fleetwood spurned goal opportunities in their bid for a fourth try and a bonus point.
But they couldn’t cross the whitewash again, despite De La Salle having three players sin-binned. Indeed, it was the home side who scored the only points of the half with a try in the corner.
Second-placed Aspatria have cut Fleet’s lead to a single point with their handsome win over Upper Eden and they have four to play, one more than the leaders.
