Blackpool Men braved the cold to play Neston Seconds on the Wirral, where a 6-2 win warmed them up for the return journey.

The win also left Blackpool within three points of the top two as other games in North West division one were frozen off.

The division’s top scorer Dave Morgan netted twice as did Spanish import Mariano de la Lastra. Ian Swaine and Steve Whitley were the other scorers.

Blackpool Seconds are very much in the promotion hunt too, climbing to second in division seven north with a 2-0 win over Didsbury at icy Stanley Park.

A well-worked move finished by Jordan Payne gave them the perfect start as Blackpool defied the difficult conditions to play good hockey.

Chris Hocking sealed victory from a short corner and dominant Blackpool had chances to add to their tally.

Two Blackpool Ladies teams also beat the freeze but had a difficult day at Lancaster University.

This first team beat Lancaster Seconds 6-0 on their previous meeting but faced a very different students’ side and lost 5-3 in the Lancashire Central premier division.

Lancaster started strongly but some outstanding saves from Blackpool keeper Sandra Wood kept them at bay.

It was Blackpool who opened the scoring when Kandy Cardwell picked out Maria Adams in the circle. The visitors were frustrated by the umpiring as Lancaster hit back to lead 2-1.

Cardwell equalised from the edge of the D, following a fine build-up from the back featuring Vicky Hives and Lauren Burrell.

Lancaster went 4-2 ahead before Blackpool pulled one back with a Sophie Thomas tap-in from a short corner.

The home side completed the scoring, despite Blackpool’s appeals that the shot was taken from outside the circle.

Blackpool Thirds suffered a 4-0 defeat against a strong Lancaster Fourths in division three.

n All fixtures involving Lytham’s men’s and ladies’ teams were postponed.

A Lytham ladies team is guaranteed in the Caley Trophy final as their first team play the seconds in Saturday’s semi-final.

The winners will play Garstang or Southport in the final on March 31.
