Fylde flying so high
Flyers v Raptors Bobby Caunce wins the face-off
FYLDE Flyers were emphatic 11-0 winners in their home derby against Lancashire Raptors in the English National Ice Hockey League.
Both sides were understrength but that did not prevent Fylde dominating the Blackburn-based side at Cleveleys’ Sub-Zero Arena.
Fylde made a perfect start with a goal in the second minute as Stew Marriott forced the puck home after good work by captain Wayne Whitby and Elvis Veldze.
Flyers didn’t look back and were 5-0 up at the first interval thanks to further goals from Dan Bracegirdle, Tom Murphy and two from Ric Hulme.
Wayne Whitby, Tony Melbourne and Bobby Caunce provided the assists.
Flyers also took the opportunity to give young netminder Sam Heyes some valuable ice time after Steve Gilmartin had kept out all the Raptors’ shots in the first period.
Janis Grinbergs and Chris Butcher added further Fylde goals during the second period, with Hulme assisting Grinbergs’.
The final period was very much the Elvis show as Latvian Veldze helped himself to three of the final four goals.
One was an unstoppable slap-shot from halfway, bettered perhaps by a solo effort which saw him snake through from his own end to finish coolly past Nick Saxton in the Raptors goal.
Caunce took the goal tally into double figures after some sharp work round the net.
Not surprisingly, Veldze took the most valuable player award for the Flyers and Christian Wareing for the Raptors.
Lancashire will be looking to ice a much stronger squad when the teams meet again at Cleveleys next Saturday, face-off 5pm.
Flyers’ Kurtis Hall will miss that match after receiving a two-game ban for amassing ten penalty points.
