Second British record for Fleetwood powerlifter Rachel Normington
Having been crowned British champion for a lift from the ‘squat’ position earlier this year, setting a new national record in the process, the 30-year-old has now set a new British record for the deadlift.
Competing at the North Wales qualifying event in Rhyl, Rachel topped her opening lift of 160kg with a record-breaking 170kg.

rmington’s achievements this year are all the more remarkable as her training has been restricted by the pandemic and by the demands of her nursing job, working at Clifton Hospital and Trinity Hospice.
Although the event in Wales was a qualifier for the 2021 European Championship, Rachel had already qualified for next year’s summer showpiece in Manchester and went to Rhyl for some competitive action.
Before the Euros, she is set to contest the British championships in Birmingham in May.

Hide AdNormington told The Gazette: “The event in Wales was what is called ‘Multi-Ply’ powerlifting, which means you wear a canvas suit.
“I attempted 185kg but couldn’t lock it out, though I’m delighted with another record because my training has been patchy this year with Covid and the lockdowns.
“I’d already qualified for the Euros but I wanted some platform time and numbers on the board going into next year.
“The 170kg lift is an unofficial world record but it would have to be officiated on an international platform and hopefully I can do that next year.”
