No rush for signings, says Ollie
IAN Holloway is not expecting to make a rash of signings in the near future – and he is making no apologies for it.
Seasiders supporters have been eager for new faces to arrive since Holloway was installed as manager last month.
But the boss is refusing to be rushed when it comes to splashing the cash and is not scared of making that perfectly clear to the fans.
Holloway said: "I want to assess every player and what they can bring to the squad. I know that we need to bring in players to add to the squad, but if anyone thinks I am going to bringing loads of players in the next week or two they need to hang on a minute.
"I am not going to be rushed. I have to know that whoever we bring in is the right sort of player for the club.
"We need a certain character of player who can fit into what is already a good dressing room, with good honest characters. That is what I want."
Summer is the busiest time of the year when it comes to agents touting their players about.
The Seasiders have been snowed under with calls and faxes and Holloway is personally checking each available player.
He may move quickly to bring in the odd player – out of contract Leeds pair Jonathan Douglas and Fraser Richardson are being linked with the club, as well as Grimsby defender Ryan Bennett.
As well as looking at free transfers, the new boss also has money to spend – though, once again, he insists he won't be hurried into making signings.
"I can't believe how expensive these players have become and I have said no to one or two because I genuinely don't believe they are good value for money," he said.
"It has been so easy in the past for clubs to go and waste a lot of money on players who don't contribute to the season, and it has been so easy for clubs to get the money through banks and by getting into debt.
"But with the credit crunch, the banks aren't giving the clubs the support they once did.
"It would be so easy to make a mistake on a signing and overpay someone, and I am not going to do that. I am glad to be at a club that is not willing to do that.
"My last job was at a club that would do that and ultimately that cost them their place in the Championship.
"What we have to do is make sure we get value for money from the players we do sign."
Danny Coid and Brett Ormerod remain in discussions about signing new contracts with the Seasiders.
The club hope to have at least one deal wrapped up by the end of the week.
