Mellon signs 'league's best right-back'
Fleetwood Town have made their third signing of the close-season by recruiting full-back Ashley Wooliscroft from Stalybridge Celtic.
The 29-year-old right-back, who played against Town in Blue Square North last season, follows wingers Lee Dodgson and Chris Williams in moving the Highbury.
And after witnessing Town's firepower at first hand in Celtic's 5-0 home defeat in March , the defender had few doubts about making the move.
He said: "Fleetwood got two quick goals and we were five down before we knew about it. It really was crash, bang, wallop and not many teams came to Stalybridge and did that.
"Town are aiming for the top five and what they did last season shows we can do just that.
"The plans at the club are very ambitious. I have gained a lot of experience at this level over the last couple of years with Stalybridge, and I played in a play-off final against Barrow."
The defender started his career at Stoke as a trainee and made two first-team appearances before moving into the Conference with Telford United in 2001.
Stints with League of Wales side Newtown, Leek Town, Kidsgrove Athletic and Hednesford Town followed.
Mellon said: "The feeling among most managers is that Wolliscroft is the best right-back in our league.
"He knows what it takes to be in contention for promotion in this league. He's been there with Stalybridge, when they have fallen at the last hurdle.
"After losing Keiran Walmsley, we only had one right-back in young Shaun Beeley and needed competition, which I want in all positions."
Mellon is delighted with his summer transfer activity so far. He added: "One thing we lacked last season was blistering pace and Jamie Mullan fills that gap.
"He has electrifying pace and I don't think there are many players in Blue Square North to match him. He's only 21 and brings bags of potential. He's well equipped to be a force at our level and can play on either wing.
"Mullan has ambition and wants to move up the leagues. I'm not bringing players in who have settled for playing at this level. I want lads who want to come on the journey through the leagues with Fleetwood Town.
"Lee Dodgson scored just under 20 goals last season from the wing and that shows he's a handy lad to have around."
Mellon says further summer additions are expected but fans may have to be patient.
"The other players I'm looking at may take another few weeks.
"Some deals are finished fairly quickly but others take a bit of time.
"The squad we had at the end of last season was rated very highly, so you will need to be a very good player to be brought to Highbury."
Current players Mike Wilde, Steven Connors and Beeley have all signed new contracts.
