Injury may ruin Southern's dream

KEITH Southern faces a scan today to find out if he has suffered medial knee ligament damage which could keep him out for months.

The Seasiders midfielder was stretchered off at the end of Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Bristol City, compounding a miserable pre-season which has already seen Billy Clarke ruled out of the Premier League campaign with a knee injury.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher also joined the casualty list at Ashton Gate, suffering a deep gash to his shin which required six stitches. He's a doubt for the final pre-season game at home to Hibernian on Sunday.

Southern joined the club in the depths of League One in 2002 and has been an integral part of their remarkable rise.

The 29-year-old labelled the prospect of playing in the top flight as his "proudest moment", but he may now sit out the first half of the campaign if the lunchtime scan confirms his injury to be as serious as feared.

That would leave Southern distraught and manager Ian Holloway facing an even bigger headache.

Already seriously short of players, Pool are now crying out for reinforcements with the season opener at Wigan just 12 days away.
