Jockey Daryl Jacob was attended by medical staff following a dramatic incident before the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham in a race won by Very Wood,
Jacob’s mount Port Melon crashed into a rail before the race, throwing the rider to the ground in a spectator area.
With onlookers very close by, it was good fortune that a serious incident involving spectators was avoided, with a Channel 4 camera position sent flying.
Jacob, who won the preceding County Hurdle on Lac Fontana, was seen being stretchered away from the area but was reportedly conscious although feeling pain in one of his legs.
The start to the Albert Bartlett was delayed while Jacob was treated.
Jacob collided with a tv camera, smashing some of the signage and the plastic rail.
Very Wood, the winner, is trained by Noel Meade, with Paul Carberry in the plate.
Very Wood was sent off a 33-1 shot, his odds reflected the poor form he had shown of late.
The much-touted Briar Hill and Kings Palace failed to figure.
Meade said afterwards: “He always threatened to be a good horse, but he needs this staying trip.
“He’s really a chaser for next year.
“We’ve had some sort of a bug in the yard this season, we had temperatures all over the place, but we managed to get it corralled into the bottom yard and we’ve held it there, and the horses have started to pick up again.”
