Racing’s Scoop6 bet was finally landed today when eight lucky winners grabbed the money, earning £1.3 million apiece.
The outcome of the mammoth, six-race bet depended on Saturday’s 3.45 race at Haydock Park.
By that time it looked virtually certain that the huge pool would be landed, as there was only one horse - outsider Grevillea - who had not been covered in the accumulator wager.
It must have been agony for the holders of the 122 tickets who were still surviving by the sixth and final leg.
The race was won by the Alan King-trained Chatez, ridden by Ferguson Sweeney.
There were eight winning tickets on that horse and once the three-year-old whizzed past the post the holders knew they had landed £1.3 million apiece.
The succcessful punters had the chance to increase their winnings as they all were in contention to go for next Saturday’s bonus fund, which carries the small matter of £5 million.
To win the £5 million, any of the eight have to nominate the winner of a chosen race.
