Hail the Quayle girls

TWO star swimmers from the Newton Hall club have received Blackpool's ultimate junior sports accolades.

Sarah Lucas has won Blackpool Council's top honour, the Quayle Trophy, after an outstanding year of achievements in the pool, while clubmate Taegan O'Hara has won the Quayle Shield. Taegan is also an outstanding athlete and hockey player.

Collegiate High school pupil Sarah won an assortment of prestigious gold medals last year in the Under 14/15 age group and was selected for Great Britain.

She won the 3km freestyle and 1,750m events in the ASA National British open water championships in Nottingham last year.

Lucas also won two more golds at the English Schools Championships at Crystal Palace, in the 200m individual medley and the 400m freestyle.

The Newton Hall swimming club member had a superb ASA regional Youth Championships, winning gold in the 800m freestyle.

She also won silvers in the 200m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle and 400m team medley, along with bronze in the individual medley and 800m team freestyle.

Sarah represented GB in the French Open Water Cup and won silver in the 5km swim.

Taegan O'Hara attends Hodgson High school and represented Lancashire at athletics.

Selected for the standing triple jump and relay, she helped the team to qualify for the national finals in Birmingham.

A Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde AC member, she broke the club's Under-13 70m hurdles club record with a time of 12.5 secs, representing BWF in the UK Young Athletes' championships.

She won track and field awards at BWF's annual presentations.

In swimming at the Newton Hall club championships, Taegan won the 50m backstroke, butterfly and freestyle events. and was selected for the A team.

She captained the Wyre hockey team in the Lancashire Youth games and was selected for the county development squad.
