Grayson pleased to beat the odds

BLACKPOOL boss Simon Grayson expressed his delight at beating the odds to capture Rangers midfielder Alan Gow on what the club described as the busiest transfer day in recent history.

The Seasiders made only one signing but Grayson and his staff spent all day receiving calls from agents and other clubs about players.

Gow has signed on loan but an agreement is in place to make the move permanent on January 1, when the initial deal expires.

"It was one of the busiest deadline days I have experienced," said Blackpool FC secretary Matthew Williams, who was at Bloomfield Road until the early hours.

"The number of agents and clubs trying to get moves done was surprising.

"At times we had three or four phones going but we are very pleased to get Alan Gow, who was the number one target from the start.

"He is desperate to come and prove himself – but the bizarre thing is that emergency loan window opens next Tuesday and the fun and games start again."

The fee will be 250,000, making Gow the club's third big-money acquisition since last season, following Rob Edwards and David Vaughan.

He becomes Grayson's 14th signing since the end of 2007/8.

Pool beat off stiff competition from a number of clubs, in particular Hearts who were confident of persuading the 25-year-old to stay in Scotland.

But despite turning down Championship clubs Burnley and Norwich, Gow decided the time was right to test himself in English football.

Grayson said: "I'm delighted we have got him and I think he will be a real asset to us.

"He is a very skilful footballer who can play anywhere in the midfield area.

"We beat off several other clubs and I think that shows how far we have come as a football club in the last couple of seasons.
