LANCASHIRE’S young guns will be aiming to emulate the county men’s and women’s teams, who have both reached their respective English finals, when they compete in the Northern Group Boys’ qualifying round at Childwall on July 11.

Home advantage could play a big part in the outcome as they face teams from Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Isle of Man, Northumberland and defending champions Yorkshire who beat them by five shots last year at Wilmslow.

Only West Lancashire’s Louis Tomlinson and Sean Blinkhorn, from Southport & Ainsdale, survive from that team.

They will be joined by Wilpshire’s Joey Lamb, Haydn McCullen, from Delamere Forest, and Tomlinson’s clubmate James Rooney, the county boys’ champion, who all figured in the Four Counties junior tournament victory at West Lancashire in April.

Completing the six-strong line-up is Lancaster’s Adam Stone who finished sixth in the county championship at Preston.

The winners will progress to the English Finals at Cotswold Hills on August 28-30 to battle for a title they have won three times since the event was inaugurated in 1986, the last occasion at Pannal six years ago.

Lancashire team: Sean Blinkhorn (Southport & Ainsdale); Joey Lamb (Wilpshire), Haydn McCullen (Delamere Forest), James Rooney (West Lancs), Adam Stone (Lancaster), Louis Tomlinson (West Lancs).

*THE Fylde scratch team entertain Preston at Fairhaven on Tuesday.

The probable home line-up is: Lee Mayers (Fairhaven, +1) Simon Denye (St Annes Old Links, +1, Richard Galley (St Annes Old Links, +1) Paul Thornton (Old Links, +1) Andrew McLoughney (Old Links, +1). McLoughney comes into the side for Royal Lytham’s Henry Tomlinson, who is playing in the Tilman Trophy.

*POOR weather conditions failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the golfers competing in Blackpool North Shore’s lady president’s day.

The winner was Lynn Atcheson (98-25=73) with Linda Smithurst the runner-up (87-12=75)

*THE Wyreside Trophy, the big open competition of the year at Knott End, has gone to the North East. The winner was Gavin Caygill, of Bishop Auckland.

*BLACKPOOL North Shore golfer David Hannis and Ian Crowther (Royal Lytham and St Annes) are in the field for the English Men’s Open Mid-Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, which gets under way at Saunton Golf Club on Friday. The field compete for the long-established Logan Trophy.
