THE deadline for entry into the Gazette Matchplay golf tournament, sponsored by Blacktax, is tomorrow.

One player who has not delayed his entry until ‘stoppage time’ is former Blackpool FC defender Colin Greenall, who is a keen golfer.

Another enthusiast who has submitted his entry is Blackpool North Shore member Dennis West. He used to work for The Gazette as newspaper sales development supervisor and so was barred from entering.

But now Dennis has retired he is free to take part.

Dennis, 68, was one of the prime movers in establishing the competition and attracting the attention of former sponsors Eastham’s.

Now playing off a handicap of 15, he said: “I will be giving it a go this year. The best I did in the past the third round, when I was knocked out at Royal Lytham.”

There is a handsome prize waiting for the lucky last four who make it through the preliminaries to the final stages in Portugal.

They will take part in the semi-finals to be followed by the final at the old course in Vilamoura on The Algarve .

It is a fabulous venue and the four finalists will stay at Vila Gale Ampalius Hotel, courtesy of Blacktax Taxis. The entry fee is £10 and there is an instant payback – entrants receive £10 of taxi vouchers from the sponsors.

Anyone wishing to enter can still use the form that has been published in The Gazette. Alternatiively, call the hot-line on 01772 838180 or follow the links at www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk
