Skipper Bill leads county

Bill Bromilow

BILL Bromilow has been elected Lancashire county captain for a fifth successive year.

But he will stand down at the end of the season and hand over the reins to Hillside and Denton member Paul Williams.

Bromilow explained: “It will give him time to familiarise himself with the role and get to know the players.

“He has been appointed chairman of selectors and captain-elect, so he will soon get into the swing of things.”

Bromilow steered the Red Rose side to two English Championships, and a Northern Counties League title in his first three years, then took them to the English final again last autumn.

Williams claimed the County Championship in 1998 at Clitheroe and won 16 of his 39 matches for Lancashire in a 10-year spell from 1991.

Bromilow, a Royal and Ancient and England selector, hopes to go out on a high.

He has already put the players through their paces at several links courses this month, and in March takes his 12-strong top squad for a three-day training session at the EGU Woodhall Spa headquarters.

He will start the season without the services of Walker Cup player Jack Senior, from Heysham, and Formby’s James Wilson, who have joined the professional ranks.

Bromilow said: “Last year I was two or three players short because of international events, but that might not happen this time unless one of them is picked for England.”

Lancs face a tough start to their league programme, against Northumberland at Hexham on May 12, then Cumbria at Carlisle two weeks later. They return to Northumberland on June 6 to defend the Northern Counties Championship, the qualifier for the English Finals at Beau Desert on September 28-30.

Meanwhile, Bromilow has pledged to support the county “for as long as they’ll have me,” having been involved for the last 11 years.
