ST Annes Old Links are through to the final of the Fylde Amateur League knockout competition after winning 4-2 at Fleetwood, though the match was tighter than the scoreline suggested.

The match was played in a sporting manner, and victorious captain Brian Dickie paid tribute to Fleetwood.

He said: “Fleetwood do not respect reputations, compete fiercely and are the first to shake hands after the match.

“The spirit of the match was summed up by Fleetwood’s scratch captain Paul Anderton.

“On hearing his team could not win, he called for a half-match with Alex Snape on the last green, despite being in a better position.”

Andy McLoughney (Old Links) was in fine form and provided a good platform for his team.

This was followed by wins for Connor Griffith and Bob McLean.

The last match provided a fine win for Fleetwood, with Alex Croston beating one of the best young players in Lancashire, Tom Stuart.

The other two matches ended in ties, although Matt Walton effectively won Old Links the game with a successful eight-foot putt on the last green.

Walton has just returned from a very successful spell in American college golf, where he represents Rend Lake College, and in his first season was their best player, culminating in his success at the final, and most important, event of the season, the All-American National Golf Championship, finishing in fifth place overall.

Results (Fleetwood names first): Karl Smith lost to Andy McLoughney 4 and 3; Simon Older lost to Conor Griffiths 3 and 2; Neil Croston lost to Bob McLean 2 and 1; Paul Raynor halved with Matt Walton; Paul Anderton halved with Alex Snape; Alex Croston beat Tom Stuart 3 and 2.

In the final, Old Links will take on the winners of the other semi-final between Blackpool North Shore and Knott End.

The final will take place at a neutral venue.
