FORMER Blackpool FC defender Colin Greenall toiled to an 87 in regional qualifying for next month’s Open Golf Championship at Lytham.
The scratch amateur from St Annes Old Links was one of a host of local players to miss out as their ambitious Lytham dream evaporated.
West Ham player Gary O’Neil’s bid ended at the first hurdle. The 29-year-old midfielder managed only a 79 at The London Club in Kent.
Greenall and the rest were among 1,400 players in 14 regional qualifiers around Britain and Ireland. The successful ones still have to negotiate 36 holes of final qualifying next Tuesday, with only 12 of 288 players at four courses going through to Lytham.
The four are St Annes Old Links, Hillside, West Lancashire and Southport & Ainsdale. Royal Lytham amateur Henry Tomlinson had a near miss at Clitheroe. He was just one stroke away from qualifying and had to be content with a place on the reserve list for next Tuesday.
