It was a day of surprises on Thursday in the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship at Fairhaven Golf Club
Top seeds Bethan Popel and Rochelle Morris, the leading qualifiers from the strokeplay stages, were both beaten in the second round in the matchplay format.
Only two of the leading eight qualifiers were left in Thursday’s last 16.
They are the number four seed Malene K Hansen, from Denmark, and the number eight seed Clara Aveling, of Belgium.
Jing Yan, 17, who is Chinese but lives in Singapore, is believed to be the first Chinese player to reach the last 16 of the Girls’ British championship,
