Fylde fear for Banks injury

FYLDE director of rugby Mark Nelson will wait with fingers crossed to discover the extent of skipper Roger Banks' knee ligament damage.

The lock was forced off in the first half at Darlington Mowden Park, his worrying injury taking the shine off a powerful performance and a desperately-desired victory.

And Nelson revealed that a team huddle outside the ground played its part in firing up his charges.

Nelson said: "The players were totally committed. I got the lads together in the street outside the ground. We talked about no Fylde team having won a league game there and we were really determined to end that run.

"We outmuscled them and scored six tries to nil against a side fighting for their lives and with the most significant wind we have battled all season."

Nelson, who reckons DMP are now doomed to the drop, was full of praise for his forwards in the absence of their leader.

He added: "We gave away too many penalties in the first half but then the discipline improved significantly.

"The whole pack was excellent. Ali Atkinson continues to impress and Alan Holmes filled in well at flanker after Dan Bowman got a stinger."

As for the Banks injury, Nelson added: "He will definitely be out for at least two or three weeks, though we do have a blank weekend coming up."

The coach added that he was not prepared to risk Steve Nutt aggravating a rib injury in the North-East, and he tipped winger Oliver Brennand for an England Counties call-up.
