Fylde capture a Tiger as Bowman moves on
FYLDE RFC have signed hooker Johnny Roddam from Sedgley Tigers and have received a further double boost, with Lancashire duo Sam Beaumont and Oliver Brennand confirming their commitment to the cause for next season.
Roddam, 27, has played in the Premiership for Harlequins and Sale, besides gaining National One experience with Orrell and Doncaster as well as Sedgley, for whom he made 89 appearances over the past three seasons.
Fylde are particularly pleased to acquire Roddam from the Tigers after the influential Steve Nutt moved back in the opposite direction.
Generous
And Fylde's style of play won't be unfamiliar to the hooker, who produced the club's match videos last season.
Fylde say that Brennand and Beaumont, who both helped their county to win the Bill Beaumont Cup at Twickenham last month, had generous offers from other clubs.
Winger Brennand's outstanding strike rate has brought him 73 tries in 74 games, while second row or back row Beaumont has crossed seven times in 68 games.
However, Fylde have lost the services of flanker Dan Bowman, who has taken up the post of player-coach with home town club Workington Zebras.
Like Beaumont, Bowman joined the Ansdell club in 2006. He has scored eight tries in 73 appearances but a new job left him preferring a club closer to his Cumbria base.
Fylde director of rugby Mark Nelson said of the transfer activity: "I know Roddam very well from our days at Sale and Orrell. He is a durable, dynamic and aggressive player, who makes things happen. To attract a player of his experience and talent is a real coup for the club.
"We're very sorry to lose Dan but I entirely understand his reasons. He wanted to stay at Fylde but his new job made that impossible.
"He has made a massive contribution in his three seasons with us. He is a typical Cumbrian back row forward – tough, honest, brave and skilful – and he has been popular with our supporters."
*FYLDE'S Nick Royle helpeded England Counties completed a clean sweep of wins on their Far East tour.
The Woodlands winger, who played in all three matches, scored his third try of the tour in the 36-20 win over Yamaha Jubilo in Shizuoka, Japan.
This match against professional opponents was always going to be the toughest of the three and the tourists trailed 20-9 at half-time.
But Royle's 70-metre interception try five minutes after the interval launched a fightback which saw England score 27 unanswered points at Yamaha's impressive J-League soccer stadium.
It was the first of three tries from England, whose other 21 points all came from the boot of Birmingham Solihull full-back Mark Woodrow.
