Fuller keen for Fylde to beat freeze and backlog

LEADERS AFC Fylde are hopeful that tonight's home match with Colne in the Vodkat NWCL will be played, writes MIKE YOUNG.

A lunchtime look at the Kellamergh Park pitch is planned, with Fylde keen to re-open a clear gap at the top after being grounded on Saturday when they should have entertained Silsden.

Manager Mick Fuller said the pitch is hard but flat and he believed Saturday's game could have gone ahead had an inspection taken place later. Blackpool referee Andy Newell was called in around 10am and concerns he raised were sorted by 11.

Another postponement tonight would leave Fylde with five home games to rearrange but Fuller isn't fearful that the FA Vase holders are heading for a fixture pile-up with a potential cup run to consider.

"Of our rivals, Newcastle and Glossop have played three more and New Mills two more, so we're not many miles off.

"Last season was three a week at the end but we got there."

Fuller confirmed that former Fleetwood Town player of the year Phil Robinson will make his debut tonight if the game is on.

Robinson slots straight in for his former Highbury Avenue team-mate Phil Thompson, who picked up an ankle injury in the 3-1 Boxing Day win at Squires Gate.

Winger Mick Horsfall is nursing a calf injury from the same game.

Fuller could hand control of next weekend's team to his no.2 Paul Eastwood as the countdown begins to the Vase fourth round tie away to Needham Market on Saturday week.

Fuller intends watching last season's beaten semi-finalists either away to Harwich and Parkeston on Saturday or at home four days later.

Needham are mid-table in the Ridgeons Eastern Counties premier division, where Lowestoft Town and Leiston Town are first and second respectively. Lowestoft lost to Fylde in the FA Vase final and Leiston were beaten by Fleetwood in this season's FA Cup.

Fuller added: "I don't think Needham have changed much from when we last played them so we've a fair idea what they're like."

*FLEETWOOD Town, whose last three matches have been postponed, hope to face AFC Blackpool in a friendly at their Collins Park training base tonight (7.30pm; free admission).
