The final of the Harry Johnston Cup was contested by two well-matched teams at Bloomfield Road, and resulted in St Bede’s Catholic High School defeating Mary’s Catholic Academy 2-1.

The opening stages were evenly contested and after 14 minutes Cardwell scored for St Bede’s with a driven shot from outside the box.

Both teams continued to play some fluent football and St Mary’s came more into the game.

Hodgkinson came close to an equaliser when he lobbed the keeper after going through one on one.

The breakthrough came for St Mary’s after 24 minutes, when a low cross by Drake was met by Hodgkinson and he converted from five yards to make it 1-1 at half-time.

The second half started with some good pressure and possession from St Bede’s, and after 56 minutes Smith
managed to dance past three defenders and slot the ball underneath the keeper via the far post.

St Mary’s then piled on the pressure and made St Bede’s work very hard to conserve their advantage.

The last 15 minutes saw the St Bede’s defence fight valiantly and Disley proved to be an impassable barrier.

Credit to St Mary’s as their heads never went down and they continued to make St Bede’s work hard for their victory.
