FLEETWOOD Town chairman Andy Pilley believes the appointment of Graham Alexander as manager is no gamble.
The Highbury club took just five days to put a new man in place, and Pilley insists he’s found Fleetwood “a diamond”.
Pilley said: “Graham is was a young, exciting manager who is going to have a huge future in the game. To those who say we’ve taken a gamble, I say that’s your opinion but you haven’t been party to the discussions we had.
“I’ve spoken with some very experienced managers who interviewed incredibly impressively.
“But as a businessman I interview people regularly, and the person who excited me the most was Graham Alexander. He’s the person I think I can work with.
“I am quite a young chairman, I have a young chief executive and now we have a young manager – he fits in with the profile of the club.”
Pilley revealed he spoke to a number of high-profile figures, including Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston, before deciding on his man. He said: “I phoned around people I respect in the game and asked their opinion on Graham. That includes the Blackpool chairman and the Preston chairman, and there was a very consistent message that he is a diamond of a man.
“He is first class, incredibly professional. He has high standards, he’s intelligent and incredibly driven. We’ve got our man.”
Pilley hopes Alexander will bring the attributes which helped him extend his playing career beyond his 40th birthday. The chairman added: “You don’t have the career he has had by accident.
“You get that by having high standards, looking after yourself and being driven. That’s what impressed me. He’s clearly got every drop out of his playing career. If he can bring that expertise, drive and determination to his career as a manager I’ll be a very happy chairman.”
