SQUIRES Gate FC have appointed Dave McCann as their new manager of the relegation-haunted club.

He replaces Gary Hargreaves who left the club after seeing them drop into the relegation zone.

Following Hargreaves’ departure, John Maguire took temporary charge of the side for the 2-2 draw with Bootle on Tuesday.

McCann played under four managers at Gate and was assistant boss to Russ McKenna until last season.

McCann set out his immediate priority; keeping the side up.

He said: “The aim is survival.

“I will be looking for an assistant with a good knowledge of the game, but also with the same feelings I have for Squires Gate, wanting to help them out of trouble.

“We will require honesty from the players and spirit.

“I saw a workmanlike performance from the lads (against Bootle) but they were caught out by two first half goals.

Things did not bode well for Gate as they fell behind after just two minutes, Sean Coulton netting for Bootle after hesitation from the Gate defence.

The Merseysiders stood firm against Gate attacks and against the run of play mounted only their second foray into Gate’s territory resulting in their second through Curtis Gill.

On 30 minutes Gate reduced the deficit.

Alan Coar was brought down in the area by the Bucks’ ‘keeper but the ball fell to Gate’s Sam Farrow who tapped it in.

On the hour mark Lee Baker prevented Bootle from stretching their lead putting his body on line to block a certain goal.

This was to prove vital as in the dying seconds of the game Bootle failed to clear from an Alan Coar header and Luke Walker hit a 20 yard screamer to make it 2-2.
