FLEETWOOD Town FC head up to Scotland today to continue their rigorous pre-season programme under new fitness coach Martin Cooper.
The week-long training camp culminates in a match against Partick Thistle in Grangemouth on Saturday, the first of Town’s nine scheduled friendlies.
The squad were certainly thrown in at the deep end when pre-season training began at Fylde RFC on Friday.
It was followed on Saturday by a fell running session at Scorton, similar to the one Cooper conducted during the winter freeze-up.
Manager Micky Mellon said: “It’s always good to get the first session under way and welcome new faces on and off the pitch.
“We’ve worked hard to get this far and now need to push on. The lads know Martin and he is a fair guy with realistic expectations. He will produce one of the fittest teams in the division.
“I’m looking forward to heading up to my homeland and the fantastic facilities waiting for us will allow us to move on another stage.”
Town journeyed north this morning and will be based at Stirling University throughout the week before playing The Jags at the Grangemouth Sports Stadium at 12.30pm on Saturday.
*THIS week’s announcement of Town’s 2011-12 fixtures in the Blue Square Bet Premier has been delayed.
Conference fixtures were due to be released tomorrow, but Rushden & Diamonds have an FA appeal against their demotion from non-league’s top division set for that date.
As a result, the fixtures will be released at 10am on Wednesday at the earliest.
Rushden, the first team Town faced at this level last season, were demoted for financial reasons.
It meant that Southport, who finished fourth-bottom, were spared relegation and reinstated in place of the Northamptonshire club, though that is all subject to tomorrow’s appeal.
*Town have revealed their squad numbers for the coming season. Besides unlucky 13, there is no No.17, 28 or 29, though the Highbury club aren’t planning on adding to their eight summer signings to plug the gaps.
Squad numbers for 2011-12: 1. Davies, 2. Beeley, 3. Edwards, 4. Barry, 5. McNulty, 6. Pond, 7. Clancy, 8. Milligan, 9. Brodie, 10. Vieira, 11. Till, 12. Brown, 14. Mangan, 15. Briggs, 16. St Louis-Hamilton, 18. McGuire, 19. Seddon, 20. Linwood, 21. Duggan, 22. Sumner, 23. Camozzi, 24. Hughes, 25. Atkinson, 26. Cavanagh, 27. Donnelly, 30. Rowe.
