FLEETWOOD Town’s squad players are ruing a night of missed opportunities – wasted chances to beat Radcliffe Borough and a wasted chance to force their way into manager Micky Mellon’s thinking for Saturday’s home clash with Stockport.

And no-one was more disappointed with Tuesday’s penalty shootout defeat in the Lancashire Trophy than Keith Briggs, who is battling back from knee ligament damage but suffered a new setback.

The midfielder needed stitches in a cut foot and could not return for the second half, dashing his hopes of facing former club County this weekend.

Briggs said; “It happened in the first couple of minutes and I didn’t feel it because the adrenaline gets your through.

“But when I took the sock off at half-time I saw there was a hole and it was really disappointing because I needed the 90 minutes.

“My luck just isn’t there at the moment but hopefully after a week or two I’ll be back in the mix.

“It’s a big game against my old club on Saturday and it’s on the telly, so I wanted to be involved.”

But Briggs knows he wasn’t the only one downhearted after Town’s midweek display. He added: “Some players could have put themselves in the shop window but we let ourselves down. The gaffer had some harsh words but we just have to move on and work hard.”

Assistant manager Craig Madden said: “We were disappointing with the ball. We didn’t move it quickly enough, we weren’t fluent enough and we can’t be so wasteful in front of goal – that’s what we have not been at first- team level.

“These are players who are trying to get into the side. They train every day and have shown they have the ability, but we had enough chances to put the game to bed and we were not good enough. Radcliffe had a right go but we didn’t stand up to the test.”

Two young players to escape criticism were first-year pro Liam Wynn and scholar Jamie Allen.

Madden added: “Wynny deserved to get on and he put in two fabulous balls. Jamie deserved his chance too. He has been training with the first team for a week or so and has looked really good, so we are really pleased with those two.”
