FLEETWOOD Town manager Mick Mellon has revealed that the arrival at the club of experienced defender Youl Mawene pushed defender Kieran Charnock down the pecking-order and out to a loan move with Macclesfield.
Mellon, explaining the sequence of events, said: “Macclesfield approached us and said they were interested in him – then Youl Mawene became available for us.
“We felt that adding Mawene to the group was going to be positive for us, and that Charnock was not going to play first team football.
“We told him that if we picked a team tonight, he wouldn’t be in the first XI, but at Macclesfield he would be.
“He said he wanted first team football so we said: ‘Terrific, go and play at Macclesfield.’
Mellon added: “He has gone on loan until January – we will find out what his plans are at Christmas and speak about it then.”
One player expected to figure in this afternoon’s home friendly with Tranmere is Conor McLaughlin, who said: “I am feeling fitter and I am settling in well.
“It helps knowing players from when I was at Preston North End.”
